Don't Forget to Do the Littie Things - 02/10/07Plaid councillors have raised concerns on the failure of Carmarthenshire County Council to deliver day to day services, Time after time the response to their requests is lack of finance to deal with problems. Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said: "The council appears to be very good on high profile expensive projects, but when it comes to the day to day complaints by residents, its difficult to have anything done. We have problems with litter, back lane rubbish, keeping paths open, potholes - matters that affect the people directly every day." "Both councillors and staff are frustrated by the lack of finance for low profile problems. Its about time for the council to practice the words of our patron saint St David - 'Gwnewch y pethau bychain' (do the little things) which the Council has failed to do up to now." "It appears that the back lanes are cleaned mainly on 'request basis only'. This is simply not good enough in the 20C." Cllr Joy Williams is concerned at the lack of funding for bus shelters. She said: "For years I have tried to have a bus shelter in my ward. On the one hand we encourage the public to use public transport, therefore one would expect this to have high priority. Its not good enough in the 21st century for the elderly and the frail to have to be exposed to the wind and the rain of winter." Cllr Tyssul Evans added: "I feel sorry for housing department officers in particular as they simply haven't got the budget even to do the smallest of tasks like clearing footways on estates and cutting back growth on adjacent housing land. Cleaning out groundwater drains has become an onerous task." |
